First appearance of emo bands as the stalwarts of punkcore was in USA in the 80’s. However, they had huge differences with their contemporaries – higher emotionality and more tunefulness. During the development there have appeared a great variety of groups. Melodious emo and harsh emocore are mixed with jazz, metal, pop-punk, folk, techno etc. Imagination of these bands doesn’t have any borders.
Nevertheless, a lot of musicians are afraid of being called emo.The main difference between emo and ordinary bands is that their music has a distinct emotional tinge.
At first word combinations in songs of emo bands didn’t have any significance and the words were quite indecipherable. However, these words were usually accompanied with attendant acute and load chords. Even musicians didn’t care about the lucidity of words during the concerts as well as song recording. Contents of their works correspond with common emo themes: emotions in different life situations, certain feelings; also it was necessary to express strong exertion.During concerts performers liked to turn their back to the fans. When music became more aggressive with a lot of explosive chords, they begin to behave in accordance with their tunes: they could not only run and jump over the stage, shake microphones, but also throw different things into the audience. Some vocalists tried not to sing in microphone and vise versa. They started to scream purposely during low musical episodes. It was done to create additional strong effect of influence over the fans.
Either extreme manifestations of emo style (sound distortion or incredible noise during concert) create necessary atmosphere for self-expression. Besides, it is the major reason why such bands attract fans, who are followers of this style of life. Members of emo bands can become exhausted after their performances as they make great efforts to develop the sense of inner freedom (expression of all emotions), the opportunity not to hide true feelings.
The amount of emo fans and such bands are increasing year by year. Their songs are heard on popular television channels and radio stations. In one’s turn, it broadens the audience. But, sometimes, musicians that have no connection with emo culture are referred to this style. As a result, it is hard to make strict line between different bands. Anyway, critics are wonder if this style of music has any historical perspectives.
Nowadays, the most famous bands are 30 seconds to Mars, AFI, Billy Talent, Bullet for My Valentine, Enter Shikari, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Funeral For A Friend, Panic! At The Disco, Saosin, Silverstein, Story of the Year, The Used, Tokio Hotel, Underoath.
