     In fact, it is unfair that emo culture became to be associated with cutting. Psychology has no arguments to relate such actions to some people or definite social groups. It is only a stereotype, which was created by media. Only people with some mental disorders or who experience frequent stresses/depressions are inclined to self-harming. So, it is useful to compare figures of cutting among emo teens and the rest of people. You will be surprised to discover that emo is a small part of the total amount of injured.

     Every person has own reasons of doing it. There is no list of exact causes. Psychologists suppose two main motives:

Because of the stress and depression. Person doesn’t see other ways to calm himself – only through cutting;

Individual can’t experience feelings or he forgot how they looked like. So, cutting is a mean to bring it back – even if it brings only painful sensation.

     Cutting is a childish thing. Someone, not only emo, could perceive it as the modern trend among emo, while another would treat it as the way to shorten one’s age. Such people need help, because they have mental problems and don’t realize it. So, look at your close people attentively if you have some suspicions. It is necessary to open their eyes, to support them, to be near. But don’t suspect all emo culture. People irrespective of age, profession, culture and political beliefs may turn to cutting. There are no common features that unite such individuals.
All in all most former emo persons confess that they were so stupid to do it and they are sorry about this page of their life.

     It depends on the places and the severity of cutting. Nevertheless, an emo girl with scars on face doesn’t look pretty. If you like to hurt hands or legs, then it won’t spoil your beauty. However, such actions can be the reasons of different diseases. I mean there is a high risk of getting infection. And, as a rule, people that “like” cutting don’t think about such possibilities. Doctors sterilize instruments before every operation for some purpose.

     Some years ago I knew emo boy, who wrote his girlfriend’s name on his hand. He did it several times till he made a legible picture. Without any doubt, he would live with these scars forever. Today she has forgotten about him. He also has another love, but there is a reminder of previous girl on his hand. So, think: would you like to be on his place?

     Of course, if you are teenager and there is no happiness in your life, and parents don’t understand/support/love you, your girlfriend/boyfriend has betrayed, there is no way to solve these problems or to improve your situation than cutting. You should understand that piling up of problems doesn’t help to solve them. In fact, without realizing your current position, trying to analyze the reasons and finding the ways out, there would be no calm and happiness.
