     Emo – is a term, which describes particular type of hardcore. This music style is based on strong emotions in the vocalist’s voice and melodious, but sometimes chaotic, musical illustration. Distinctive feature of this music is a manner of vocal that often includes scream, moans, whisper, roar. Lyrics are usually about the feelings of authors, sometimes have political character.

     Hardcore, precursor of emo music, was born in Washington in the middle 80’s. In the following years there appeared a term “emotional hardcore”. It got such name because people in the concerts were too emotional. In fact, it was uncommon at that time. But in the early 90’s first flash of emo music began to fade away, as a lot of bands gave up their activity.

     Then new bands started to appear and they were influenced greatly by post-punk. Album «Diary» of «Sunny Day Real Estate» became a turning-point in the development of emo music in 1994. It won great popularity because of a rapid distribution through Internet. In fact, it is the first album that was entitled as emo. Gradually new music style, supported by such bands as Knapsack, Sense Field and many others, began to spread all over the country.
At that time emo music became more attractive to a lot of people, as there have been some changes in this style. It can be explained by the influence of other styles – as grunge and indie rock. Thanks to Christie Front Drive, Braid, Boys Life, emo began to be heard on radio and television.

     Nowadays its definition has changed a little bit. Such groups which play post-hardcore as The Used, Underoath, Funeral For a Friend and pop-punk bands Jimmy Eat World, Taking Back Sunday are also called emo bands. Nevertheless, there are a lot of arguments, as all of these groups have huge differences with the root of this style – hardcore.

     Generally lyrics talk about personal author’s feeling. Songs are about unrequited love, cruelty, unfairness. As every person has his own emotions –there are a lot of songs that would be close to you. The main condition: feeling must be sincere. But you can’t say that all music is the same. On the one hand, lyrics are cruel, mean, pessimistic, but on the other there are sad and pitiful songs.

     Such tunes help teenagers to express their feelings (sadness, grief, love, hate, happiness). So, when their hearts are bleeding and crying, they won’t be silent. All thoughts will be written on the paper.
On the emo festivals crowds of teenagers in bright clothes can’t stand their emotions and cover almost all dance floor with their tears. But it is extreme: true emo can shed a few tears over sad tune and will never make a show from it.

     Even if you are not a fan of such music don’t be critical. When person sings about a suicide, it doesn’t mean that he is loony. It is simply a way to throw pessimism and to make emotions easier.
